Leadership Training for Venture Crews

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Step 1 - Become an Official Scout Leader

  1. Register with the Boy Scouts of America. Fill out the Adult Application at Scouting.org. Alternatively, you may get an Adult Application from your BSA local council office.
  2. Complete Youth Protection training at MyScouting.org It will take about half an hour.

Step 2 - Complete Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection training is required for all leaders prior to submitting the Adult Application.

From the MyScouting.org portal, click on E-Learning and take Youth Protection training.

Upon completion of Youth Protection training, print the training certificate and give it, along with your completed Adult Application, to the pack committee chair (to be submitted to the BSA local council office).

  • Once your paperwork (Adult Application and YP certificate) has been submitted to the council office, it takes approximately two weeks for the background check to be completed. After two weeks you may then begin your service.
  • When your Adult Application has been approved by the BSA, you will be issued a BSA member ID number (your committee chair should be able to tell you what it is). After you know your member ID number, log back into MyScouting, click on My Profile, and update the system by inputting your ID number. This will link your Youth Protection training records (and any other training records in MyScouting.org)  to your BSA membership.
  • To learn more about BSA policies regarding Youth Protection, click here.

Note: You do not have to be a registered member or have a member ID to take Youth Protection training. To take Youth Protection training go to https://myscouting.scouting.org and create an account.

Step 3 - Take Venture Crew Leader Fast Start Training

FAST START TRAINING IS FIRST and will help you prepare for your first meeting with the Cub Scouts.

To take Venturing Fast Start training go to MyScouting.org.

REQUIRED TRAINING: Once you have finished Fast Start training, you are ready to learn more about your duties and responsibilities as a leader in the crew. Some training is only offered live and other training is available online at MyScouting.org –> Training –> E-Learning. To find out what training is required for your position, click on the BSA’s “What Makes a Trained Leader.” This is where you’ll find the most up-to-date training requirements for most Scouting leadership positions.

Leader-specific training for your position: to be completed ASAP

Venturing Advisor Position-Specific Training:

This is a NEW live course (approximately 3 hours) presented by your district or council. If your district is not offering this course in the next month or two, check your council’s calendar for the next available course that is within a reasonable distance. The training is the same throughout the BSA and you may take the course in any district or council. Due to the major changes in the Venturing program, Venturing Advisors and associate Advisors who previously were trained in Venturing Leader-Specific Training would do well to take this new training course.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills:

This is an overnight training required for all Venturing crew Advisors and associate Advisors (although it is also useful for any adults who are registered with the crew). This course is not required by the BSA for crews that do not participate in outdoor activities. However, leaders registered in Venturing crews sponsored by LDS wards are required to take this course (in order to be prepared to take their crews on high adventure activities). This is a live training experience, and if it is not offered within the next few months in your district, check the council calendar and take it in a nearby district or council.

Crew Committee Challenge:

This course is required for all crew committee members. This is a NEWlive training experience and if it is not offered within the next few months in your district check the council calendar and take it in a nearby district or council. The class takes about two hours, but if combined with Venturing Advisor Position-Specific Training (eliminating duplication of content), the two together will probably take only about 3 1/2 hours.
